AI capability is becoming more flexible. The important business question is no longer only which AI to use, but where each part of the work should run.

For most people, AI currently feels like a journey from a device, across the internet, to a data centre and back. That model is evolving as devices become capable of useful local AI tasks and edge infrastructure processes information closer to where it is generated.

AI does not have to live in one place

Device, edge and cloud are complementary layers. Device processing can be fast and local for suitable tasks. Edge processing can be nearby and operational. Cloud processing remains essential for large models, complex reasoning, scale and shared services.

The biggest model is not always the best model

Ask what task is being performed, how quickly the result is needed, what information is involved, how sensitive it is, what it costs at scale and whether a person must approve the result.

Privacy could become a design decision

Local processing may mean some information does not need to leave a device for a suitable task. It does not automatically guarantee privacy or security. Collection, storage, access, permissions, logging and retention still matter.

The future is deciding what should happen where

Most businesses do not need an edge-AI strategy document tomorrow. Start with the work, data, decision and risk, then choose the least complex capability that can improve the outcome safely.
