Don’t Use AI to Replace the Process. Redesign the Process.
AI creates more value when businesses redesign workflows around what technology can now do, rather than simply automating one old task at a time.
A recent pilotless cargo aircraft story is useful because the innovation is not only the absence of a pilot. The surrounding process can change too: how cargo is loaded, journeys are planned, fleets are supervised and human judgement is used.
The wrong question is “Who can AI replace?”
Jobs are bundles of tasks. Separate repetitive preparation from judgement, accountability, relationships and exception handling before deciding what AI should do.
Redesign the workflow, not just one step
Customer enquiries, accounts payable, sales follow-up and IT support can all benefit from better intake, information flow, automation, exception handling and human decisions — not simply more generated text.
Start with the process, not the product
Find where work is slow, repetitive, waiting, copied, error-prone or consuming skilled time. Then choose the least complex technology that can improve the outcome safely.
Measure the full outcome
Track total workflow time, handoffs, errors, rework, customer outcomes, staff capacity and total cost. AI activity is not the same as AI value.
