Stop Asking What AI Can Write. Start Asking What Problems It Can Solve.

The useful question is not where to put AI. It is which worthwhile business problem AI could help your team investigate or solve.

Most businesses first meet AI as a writing assistant: email drafting, document summaries, marketing copy, presentations and answers to questions. The direction of travel is from AI that answers questions towards systems that can be given an objective and work through a problem.

What recent research actually shows

Recent research on Google’s AI co-mathematician describes an asynchronous, stateful workbench in which AI agents support mathematical research through ideation, literature search, computational exploration and theorem proving. It illustrates a shift towards open-ended, iterative work rather than a single prompt.

That does not mean a current AI system can autonomously solve every business problem. The research is not evidence that an SME should hand an agent unrestricted access to its systems.

Three better business questions

Why have our qualified enquiries fallen?

A carefully scoped investigation could compare website analytics, CRM records, advertising activity, search visibility, competitor positioning, pricing and conversion rates. The output should be checked hypotheses, not an unexplained answer.

Where are we wasting money?

The question might lead through software licences, supplier contracts, inactive users, duplicate products and actual usage. An AI system could help assemble and compare that evidence while an owner decides what to change.

Why does this process take three days?

The investigation could map the workflow, approvals, hand-offs, duplicated work and bottlenecks. The people who understand the process still need to validate what is really happening.

Do not start with “we need some AI”

Start with business problem → desired outcome → available information → appropriate AI capability → controls → measurement. The right answer may be not to use AI.
